4 Life-Changing Reasons to Move Abroad (And How to Actually Make It Happen)

July 15, 20255 min read

Have you ever dreamed of living in another country?

Maybe you’ve imagined yourself sipping espresso in a quiet Italian piazza, working remotely from a hammock on a beach in Thailand, or wandering through the colorful markets of Mexico City. Sounds dreamy, right?

But then reality kicks in; fear, doubt, and that lingering voice asking, "Where do I even start?"

Trust me, I’ve been there. I’m Danielle Py-Salas, an attorney, entrepreneur, wife, and mom of four. Four years ago, my husband and I packed up our life in the United States and moved our family to Spain. We didn’t have all the answers, but we knew one thing for sure: we needed change.

That decision completely transformed our lives.

Moving abroad gave us more freedom, new opportunities, and a fresh outlook on the world. Today, I help others do the same through Expat Livin, a community and resource hub for individuals and families who are ready to make their dream move a reality.

So, if you’re on the fence about whether moving abroad is right for you, here are the top four reasons why it just might be the best decision you ever make, and how to begin your journey.

1. The Freedom Factor

Let’s start with what most people crave: freedom.

For many of us, life back home can feel like a grind. The endless 9-to-5 routine. The pressure to keep up with rising costs. The feeling that there’s never enough time for the things, or people, that matter most.

When we moved to Spain, everything changed. I still work. I still run businesses. But now I do it on my terms, remotely, from home, with the flexibility to go to the beach with my kids or take an afternoon walk through the neighborhood.

Remote work opportunities have exploded in recent years. Many companies are now open to fully remote or hybrid roles, which means you can live wherever you want without sacrificing your career. And when you factor in lower costs of living in countries like Portugal, Mexico, Colombia, or Vietnam, you can often earn the same income while spending far less.

Imagine cutting your rent in half, eating fresh local food daily, and having money left over to travel or invest, all without changing your job title.

That’s the kind of freedom that changes everything.

2. Personal Growth & Cultural Immersion

Moving abroad isn’t just about saving money or seeing beautiful places, it’s about growing as a person.

You’re not just relocating. You’re stepping into a new culture, a new rhythm of life, and a new perspective. You’ll eat foods you’ve never tried, celebrate holidays you didn’t know existed, and meet people who see the world in entirely different ways.

And if you’re a parent like me, the benefits for your kids are incredible. My children are growing up in a multicultural environment surrounded by multiple languages and global experiences. They’re not just learning Spanish, they’re learning resilience, adaptability, and empathy.

Learning a new language also comes with major brain benefits. It improves memory, creativity, and even job prospects. And even if you move to another English-speaking country, you’ll still encounter new slang, accents, and communication styles.

More than anything, living abroad teaches independence. You’ll navigate new systems, deal with unfamiliar bureaucracy, and figure out how to do everyday things in totally new ways. It’s challenging, but in the best way possible.

3. Better Work-Life Balance & Lifestyle

One of the biggest surprises for me after moving abroad? People actually live slower, more intentional lives.

In the U.S., I was constantly juggling work, kids, activities, and errands. Everything felt rushed. But in Spain, things move differently, and not just because shops close for siesta.

People here prioritize family time. They eat meals together. They rest. They take real vacations (not just long weekends). And somehow, everything still gets done, but without the burnout.

In many countries like Thailand, France, Costa Rica, and Italy, the culture supports a healthier work-life balance. Coffee shops might open later, but that's because people value their mornings. Government policies often include more paid time off, parental leave, and healthcare benefits.

Speaking of healthcare...

Did you know many countries offer high-quality, affordable healthcare systems, even for foreigners?

In Spain, we’ve had zero co-pays. No surprise bills. Our kids have seen doctors and even visited the hospital without us ever pulling out a credit card. That’s almost unheard of in the U.S.

And beyond healthcare, life abroad often includes more time for what matters: family, hobbies, rest, creativity. You’re not stuck commuting for hours or buried under bills. You’re free to enjoy life again.

4. Financial Growth & Career Opportunities

Let’s talk money, because yes, moving abroad can actually grow your wealth.

It’s a common misconception that moving abroad is financially risky or only for people with huge savings. The truth? Many expats save more money living abroad than they ever could at home.

Here’s why:

  • Lower cost of living in many countries means you get more for less.

  • Tax incentives in places like Portugal and Dubai can reduce your overall tax burden.

  • Digital Nomad Visas are available in 70+ countries and allow you to live and work legally while enjoying local benefits.

  • Healthcare savings, as we mentioned, can be massive.

In our first year abroad, we cut our housing costs by more than 50%. We went from a high U.S. mortgage to renting a spacious home with a pool and ocean view, for less than half the price.

Groceries? Fresh, local, and affordable. Organic food isn’t a luxury item, it’s just food.

And if you run a business or work online, global markets open up in exciting ways. You can serve clients across time zones, explore new industries, or find partnerships you wouldn’t have discovered at home.

Many expats also stumble into unexpected income opportunities just by networking internationally, consulting, remote teaching, tourism, e-commerce, and more.

So... Is Moving Abroad Right for You?

Only you can answer that, but here’s what I’ll say:

If you’re feeling stuck… craving more adventure… wanting to raise your kids differently… or just tired of the same old grind…Then yes. It’s worth exploring.

And no, you don’t have to do it alone.
