How to Choose the Right Country for Your Move Abroad

It’s More Than Just Palm Trees and Instagram Pics

You’ve got that itch, the “I need a fresh start somewhere completely new” kind of itch. We see you, wanderer. But before you sell everything, buy a one-way ticket, and start over in a tropical paradise… let’s make sure you’re choosing the right country for the right reasons.

Hi, I’m Danielle Py-Salas, founder of Expat Livin, and today I’m diving deep into the reality behind picking your perfect expat destination, not the one that looks good on Instagram, but the one that truly fits your lifestyle, budget, and dreams.

It’s Not Just About Pretty Beaches (Though That’s Nice Too)

There are over 195 countries in the world. That’s a lot of options. So how do you narrow it down?

If you think choosing your dream country is as easy as picking the place with the best sunsets, you’re missing the bigger picture. Relocating abroad isn’t just about a pretty location, it’s about finding a place that supports your actual life.

To help, I’ve broken it down into two parts:

  1. Popular Expat-Friendly Destinations

  2. The Big Questions You Need to Ask Yourself

Top Places with Thriving Expat Communities

Sometimes, the best move is to go where others have already blazed the trail. Here are five of the most popular expat hotspots:

🇵🇹 Lisbon, Portugal

A digital nomad’s dream with affordable living, vibrant culture, remote work visas, and flaky, delicious pastries. Big tech is also booming here, making it ideal for entrepreneurs and creatives.

🇲🇽 Mexico City, Mexico

Known for strong Wi-Fi, rich culture, amazing food, and a low cost of living. Whether you’re working remotely or immersing yourself in Latin American life, this city blends modern amenities with deep traditions.

🇦🇪 Dubai, UAE

Think tax-free salaries, sunshine 365 days a year, and unmatched career growth. Perfect for corporate expats, fast-paced professionals, and high-rise dreamers. But bring your A-game, Dubai moves fast.

🇮🇩 Bali, Indonesia

Yes, the yoga, coconuts, and hammocks are real. But Bali is also full of startup founders, creators, and spiritual seekers. It’s affordable, beautiful, and buzzing with energy, but make sure you’re okay with sand everywhere.

🇪🇸 Barcelona, Spain

My current home! Barcelona blends beach life with culture, creative industries, and plenty of expat-friendly vibes. If you’re a techie, artist, foodie, or someone who loves both sangria and start-ups, it’s a great match.

But Here’s the Truth: Your Dream Country Might Not Be on That List

That’s because there’s no perfect country, only the one that’s right for you. And to find it, you need to get a little nosy with yourself.

Ask Yourself These 8 Essential Questions:

  1. What’s your budget?
Are you dreaming of Paris on a peanut butter budget? Get real about your finances.

  2. Do you need a job locally or work remotely?
Some countries welcome remote workers. Others require local employment to get a visa.

  3. What lifestyle are you craving?
Beach bum, urban explorer, or mountain wanderer? Your soul has preferences. Listen to it.

  4. What language barriers are you okay with?
Be honest—are you ready to learn a new language, or do you need English-speaking comfort?

  5. How important is healthcare and safety to you?
Your future self (and your health insurance card) will thank you.

  6. Do you want an expat community or a solo adventure?
Some countries have weekly meetups. Others might leave you flying solo.

  7. What’s your time zone tolerance?
If you’re working with U.S. clients but living 14 hours ahead, that might not end well.

  8. Can you deal with the “boring stuff”?
Prescriptions, banking, finding furniture; these practical questions matter more than you think.

Danielle’s Pro Tips Before You Commit

  • Test It First: Take an extended visit. Don’t just vacation. Work, shop, and live like a local.

  • Join Communities: Ask expats what life is really like. (Hint: We’ve got one at Expat Livin Room you can join today!)

  • Check Visa Rules: Some countries roll out the welcome mat, others roll their eyes. Rules change, so talk to an expert.

  • Plan the Unsexy Stuff: Yes, even the location of the nearest IKEA matters if your new bed is a back-breaker.

Final Thought: It’s Not About Changing Your Address. It’s About Changing Your Life.

Choosing where to move abroad isn’t just about logistics, it’s about creating a life you truly love. And that decision starts with asking yourself the right questions, not following a viral post.

So take your time. Dream big. Research harder. And remember: “Adventure loves the bold, but success loves the prepared.”
